Landscaping & Hardscaping Project Planning

What’s the difference between hardscaping and softscaping in landscaping?

Landscaping is primarily considered through two lenses: hardscaping and softscaping. Both can help elevate a space on their own but when designed in complement of each other, can create a beautiful, new space.

Hardscaping is typically most of the “hard” aspects of your yard: the immoveable material that brings durability, functionality and aesthetic to your design. Softscaping is typically all of the flora in your yard, the living “colorful” additions to your space. Both create positive additions to your yard. We wrote a blog post that dives deeper into the different ways to design your landscape with both hardscaping features and softscape elements as well as the ways you can find the right balance of both in your landscaping design plans.

Do I want a patio or a deck – what’s the difference?

Patios are often made of stone pavers, interlocking stone or brick meaning these are built into ground-level. Ground-level provides an even footing from space to space in your yard, either from your house, your yard, or a pathway. Because patios are built on ground level, there is no crawlspace below, limiting the potential for critters. Decks can be made from a variety of wood, composite, vinyl, or a combination of wood and brick. Decks are versatile in that they can be built to a variety of heights.

We often refer to both patios and decks as foundational to your yard. Check out our blog diving deeper into comparing patios and decks to help decide which is best for your backyard design plans.

What are the best materials for landscaping in Calgary’s climate?

For Calgary’s extreme weather and freeze-thaw cycles, we recommend using durable materials like concrete pavers, natural stone, engineered retaining wall blocks, composite decking, and frost-resistant soils. These materials stand up best to Calgary winters.

How do I maintain my paver stone patio through Calgary winters?

To maintain your paver patio in Calgary, remove snow promptly using a plastic shovel (not metal), avoid harsh de-icers, and reapply polymeric sand every few years. Proper drainage and occasional sealing can also help protect your patio year-round.

Can you help design custom landscaping plans for my house in Calgary?

Absolutely! We specialize in custom landscaping design tailored to Calgary homeowners. We work with you to create functional, beautiful spaces that match your home, lifestyle, and budget. Every project starts with a personalized design consultation so that we are creating a plan, together, that aligns with your vision, budget and timing expectations.

Should I use paver stones or concrete for my yard?

Paver stones are more resistant to Calgary’s freeze-thaw cycles than concrete. They’re flexible, durable, and easier to repair if needed. We work with a lot of Canadian paver brands with a variety of options that are designed with Canada’s weather cycles in mind.

When is the best time to start a landscaping project in Calgary?

The ideal time to begin planning is late winter or early spring, with construction typically happening between April and October. Calgary’s weather can be unpredictable, so booking early helps lock in your ideal timeline – but, generally, if the ground isn’t frozen, we are working (sometimes even when it’s not!).

How much does a new paver patio cost in Calgary?

While it will greatly depend on your yard, vision and goals for your space, paver stone patios can start between $3,000-$20,000+, depending on size, style and materials.

The best way to get an accurate cost estimate for your paver patio is to schedule a landscaping project consultation. In our consultations, we’ll work with you onsite to walk through your vision and share ideas or recommendations for your space. This will help us determine a clear estimate of costs specific to your project.

How much should I budget for my landscaping project in Calgary?

On average, hardscaped landscaping project costs in Calgary can range anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000 and more. It will greatly depend on your yard, vision and goals for your space. On our blog, we’ve shared an overview of some of the common price ranges for popular yard upgrades in Calgary, but these are only estimates as the true cost of your landscape project will depend on several different factors.
